The Rise of Vibe Coding Risks

If you haven't heard, "vibe coding" is the 2026 trend where we stop wrestling with boring syntax and start "vibing" apps into existence using natural language. It’s fast, it’s magical, and if you aren't careful it's a total security dumpster fire.
Think of vibe coding like hiring a brilliant, caffeinated intern who works at 10,000 mph but has absolutely no concept of what a "locked door" is.
Here are three ways where the vibes turned sideways lately.
The "Overeager Intern" (Excessive Agency)
The Tech Speak: This happens when an AI agent is granted permission to modify its own environment or execute shell commands without a human "confirm" step.
The Incident: In early 2026, researchers disclosed CVE-2025-53773, a critical vulnerability where attackers used prompt injection to trick a popular AI code assistant into enabling "YOLO mode." By modifying a hidden settings file (.vscode/settings.json), the AI granted itself unrestricted shell access, effectively turning a helpful coding tool into a remote-access trojan that could install malware and recruit the developer's machine into a botnet (MDPI, 2026, OWASP LLM01:2025, Source).
The "Mind-Control" Button (Prompt Injection)
The Tech Speak: Indirect Prompt Injection occurs when an AI reads external data (like a GitHub comment) containing hidden instructions that hijack its behavior.
The Incident: Known as CamoLeak (CVSS 9.6), this June 2025 attack involved tricking an AI agent into exfiltrating secrets from private repositories. Attackers used hidden instructions to make the AI render sensitive data as "ASCII art" using a dictionary of tracking pixels. As the developer’s browser loaded these "images," the server logged the requests, allowing the attacker to reconstruct the stolen private keys character by character (LegitSecurity, 2026, OWASP LLM02:2025, Source).
The "Ghost" Library (Slopsquatting)
The Tech Speak: AI models frequently hallucinate non-existent software libraries. Attackers "slopsquat" by pre-registering these fake names with real malware (Trend Micro, 2025).
The Incident: Throughout 2025, attackers targeted the "vibe coding" workflow by registering hallucinated packages like ethers-provider2 and country-currency-map. Developers, moving fast and trusting the AI's suggestions, ran installation commands for these "phantom" libraries. Instead of a utility, they installed a backdoored module that exfiltrated environment variables—including API keys—via obfuscated HTTP requests (Trend Micro, 2025, Source).
